# MANTRA Median transaction fee Methodology

## 1. Overview

Median transaction fee is measured as the median fee paid across all transactions on Mantra Chain. A typical user payment is shown by this metric, without being skewed by very high or low values. Individual transaction fees are aggregated into daily medians and converted to USD for standardized reporting.

## 2. Data sources

- **Blockchain events**: Transaction data containing base fees, tips, timestamps, and transaction identifiers, covering Mantra Chain
- **External data**: End-of-day price feeds for assets

## 3. Step-by-step calculation

### Component A: Transaction fee processing

- **Purpose**: Extract and normalize transaction fee data from raw Mantra Chain records
- **Logic**: Each transaction is processed by extracting the `transaction_fee` and `transaction_tip` fields from raw blockchain records. For transactions occurring before block 13,000,000, fee components are normalized by 6 decimal places of precision. For transactions at or after block 13,000,000, fee components are normalized by 18 decimal places of precision to account for the protocol migration to the `amantra` denomination. Null values are handled by setting them to zero. The total transaction fee is calculated as the sum of the base fee plus the tip for each transaction.
- **Key fields**: `transaction_fee`, `transaction_tip`, `block_timestamp`, `block_height`, `transaction_hash`

### Component B: Daily median calculation

- **Purpose**: Aggregate individual transaction fees into daily median values
- **Logic**: All processed transactions are grouped by day using timestamp truncation to create daily boundaries. Transactions where the total fee equals zero are filtered out to focus only on paid transactions. For each day, the median transaction fee is calculated using approximate quantiles methodology, specifically taking the 50th percentile from 100 quantile buckets. Metadata fields are assigned, including the 'mantra' chain identifier and 'day' timestamp grain, with price identifiers transitioning from the OM asset to the MANTRA asset based on the V7 upgrade block height.
- **Key fields**: `daily_timestamp`, `transaction_fee_median`, `chain_id`

### Component C: USD conversion and aggregation

- **Purpose**: Normalize values to USD for cross-asset comparison
- **Logic**: Daily median fees are converted from native assets to USD using end-of-day price feeds. Day-level timestamp truncation is used to create consistent daily boundaries for all calculations. The final metric value is provided as the median transaction fee (50th percentile) for each day, excluding zero-fee transactions from the calculation.
- **Key fields**: `timestamp`, `transaction_fee_median`
