Validators process transactions and receive fees from users (supply-side fees).

BNB Chain is a smart contract platform for decentralized applications (a blockchain). BNB Chain was founded by Changpeng Zhao and launched in 2020.

BNB holders own and govern the protocol. They currently take a cut of the total transaction fees paid by users (revenue).

# BNB Chain Token holders Methodology

## 1. Overview

The BSC token holders metric measures the total number of unique addresses that hold native BNB tokens on the Binance Smart Chain at specific points in time. This metric provides insight into the adoption and distribution of BNB tokens by tracking how many distinct wallet addresses maintain non-zero BNB balances. The calculation identifies all addresses with BNB holdings and counts them as unique token holders.

## 2. Data sources

The calculation relies on several key data sources:
- **BSC blockchain transaction data**: Complete transaction records from the Binance Smart Chain to track BNB movements between addresses
- **Native BNB transfer events**: Blockchain events that record BNB token transfers, including regular transactions, contract interactions, and internal transfers
- **BSC account balance snapshots**: Periodic snapshots of address balances to determine current BNB holdings
- **Block timestamp data**: BSC block data providing precise timestamps for temporal aggregation and historical tracking

## 3. Step-by-step calculation

### Component A: Native BNB tokenholder identification
- **Purpose**: Identifies all unique addresses that currently hold BNB tokens and calculates the total count
- **Logic**: The underlying system processes BSC blockchain data to identify addresses with non-zero BNB balances. This involves tracking all BNB transfers, mints, and burns to maintain current balance states for each address. Addresses are filtered to include only those with positive BNB balances above dust thresholds. The calculation excludes known system addresses, burn addresses, and other non-user entities to focus on genuine token holders.
- **Key fields**: `tokenholders` represents the count of unique addresses holding BNB, `timestamp` provides the measurement time, `timestamp_grain` indicates the temporal aggregation level, and `chain` identifies BSC as the source blockchain

### Component B: Data standardization and validation
- **Purpose**: Applies consistent formatting and validates data quality for the final metric
- **Logic**: The raw tokenholder count undergoes data type conversion to high-precision numeric format to handle large numbers accurately. A finalization macro standardizes the output format, adds project metadata, and ensures consistency with Token Terminal's metric structure. Chain availability filtering ensures the metric only includes data from time periods when BSC blockchain data is considered complete and reliable.
- **Key fields**: The finalized output includes the standardized `tokenholders` count, temporal dimensions, and metadata fields that identify this as a BSC native token metric

### Final aggregation
- **Combining components**: The metric uses pre-calculated tokenholder counts from the underlying data model, requiring no additional aggregation across components
- **Currency conversion**: Not applicable as this is a count-based metric rather than a value-based metric
- **Time aggregation**: The metric maintains its original temporal granularity as determined by the underlying tokenholder calculation, typically providing daily snapshots
- **Final calculation**: The final metric value is the count of unique addresses holding non-zero amounts of native BNB tokens on BSC, filtered for data quality and availability, and formatted according to Token Terminal standards
