Overview
Staking market cap measures the value of native tokens currently staked on a proof-of-stake blockchain. It reflects how much capital is helping to secure the network.
Data sources
- Blockchain state snapshots and validator balance data
- Smart contract events and program instructions capturing staking movements
- End-of-day price feeds for USD conversion
- Asset metadata for decimal normalization
Common calculation approaches
State-based balance tracking
Daily snapshots of validator balances are extracted directly from the network state to determine the total capital committed to consensus. For example, effective balances are captured from the Ethereum beacon chain, and total pooled amounts are tracked from staking contracts on BNB Chain.
Cumulative delegation tracking
A running total of staked assets is maintained by aggregating individual delegation and undelegation movements over time. Initialize and InitializeChecked program instructions are parsed on Solana, while delegate and unbond events are captured from networks such as Celestia.
Consensus module aggregation
Total staked amounts are derived from specific consensus modules or pallets that provide aggregate network-wide data. For instance, the erasTotalStake storage item is tracked from the Polkadot staking pallet to determine the total quantity of DOT staked across all validators.
Note: The calculation approaches and protocol examples above are representative patterns. Individual protocol implementations may vary.
