Overview
Number of validators measures the number of active nodes that produce blocks and secure the network. It reflects the degree of decentralization and resilience of the blockchain.
Data sources
- Consensus layer state snapshots and validator registries
- Block headers containing proposer metadata
- On-chain reward distributions and staking event logs
- Asset metadata for decimal normalization
Common calculation approaches
Consensus state extraction
Active validator counts are extracted from consensus layer state data to identify all nodes currently participating in network security. For example, participating nodes are tracked from the beacon chain and staking modules of blockchains including Ethereum and Polkadot.
Block production analysis
Unique block proposers are identified from block metadata to measure active network participation. This approach is applied to blockchains such as Cosmos Hub, where distinct proposer addresses are aggregated daily from block headers to confirm which nodes are actively contributing to the chain.
Economic activity tracking
Active validators are identified through the distribution of rewards or the maintenance of staked balances. Voting rewards are extracted from Solana, and accounts with positive staked balances are tracked from NEAR Protocol to determine the daily count of unique, active validator nodes.
Note: The calculation approaches and protocol examples above are representative patterns. Individual protocol implementations may vary.
