# Median transaction fee Methodology

## Overview

Median transaction fee measures the median fee paid across all transactions. It shows what a typical user pays, without being skewed by very high or low values.

## Data sources

- Blockchain transaction records capturing gas usage, gas prices, and Layer 1 fee components
- Token price feeds for USD conversion
- Token metadata for decimal precision and asset identification

## Common calculation approaches

### Gas consumption fee extraction
For Layer 1 blockchains, individual transaction fees are derived by multiplying the gas used by the effective gas price for every transaction. This approach is applied to blockchains such as XDC Network and Gnosis to capture fee amounts in the native network token before determining the daily median.

### Rollup fee aggregation
For Layer 2 networks, transaction fees are calculated as the sum of Layer 2 execution costs and Layer 1 data availability fees. These components are extracted from transaction records on networks including Boba Network and Uniswap to account for the total cost of transacting on a rollup before finding the median value.

### EIP-1559 fee logic
Base fees and priority fees are parsed from block and transaction records according to EIP-1559 specifications. This logic is utilized for blockchains such as Berachain to ensure all components of the gas fee model are included before the daily median is determined across all network activity.

**Note:** The calculation approaches and protocol examples above are representative patterns. Individual protocol implementations may vary.

Through the use of blockchain and modern APIs, Ripple enables financial institutions who are part of the network, RippleNet, to send money globally, instantly, reliably and for fractions of a penny. RippleNet is built on top of Ripple’s consensus ledger, XRP Ledger (XRPL).

Ripple is the leading provider of crypto-enabled solutions for businesses. Ripple was founded by Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb and launched in 2012 (previously OpenCoin).

XRP tokenholders own and govern Ripple's consensus ledger 'XRP Ledger' (XRPL). Ripple's investors include a16z, Pantera Capital, Route 66 Ventures, etc.
