# Kilt Chain Number of validators Methodology

## 1. Overview

Number of validators measures the number of active nodes that produce blocks and secure the network. It reflects the degree of decentralization and resilience of the blockchain. For Kilt Chain, this metric represents the count of active collators participating in the parachain's consensus mechanism through the staking system.

## 2. Data sources

- **Blockchain events**: `totalCollatorStake` records from the `parachainStaking` module, covering Kilt Chain

## 3. Step-by-step calculation

### Component A: Collator identification and counting

- **Purpose**: Identify unique active nodes participating in the network's consensus.
- **Logic**: Active nodes are identified through the `parachainStaking` module, which records staking data for the network's validator set. Unique validator identifiers are extracted from these records. The count of distinct validator IDs is calculated for each daily period to determine the total size of the active node set.
- **Key fields**: `validator_id` (unique node identifier), `block_timestamp` (timing)

### Component B: Temporal aggregation and data continuity

- **Purpose**: Ensure a continuous and normalized time series for reporting.
- **Logic**: Staking records are aggregated into daily intervals based on UTC timestamps. A fill-forward strategy is applied to the time series to ensure that the most recently reported validator count is maintained during periods without state changes. The resulting values are indexed to the end of each day.
- **Key fields**: `timestamp` (daily grain), `number_of_validators` (distinct count)
