Node operators process transactions and receive token incentives. These independently owned high-spec node machines around the world are connected via Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), creating a self-sovereign network not reliant on any cloud services. Advanced cryptography allows any application or service to be run on the network in a decentralized manner via smart contracts.

The Internet Computer is a decentralized cloud blockchain, where apps can be built fully onchain, using AI, or by coding. Try caffeine.ai & icp.ninja.

ICP tokenholders own and govern the protocol. They currently take (burn) all of the total transaction fees paid by users (revenue). ICP Holders can stake their ICP on the Network Nervous System (NNS), an advanced fully on-chain DAO that facilitates liquid democracy. Staking ICP allows users to submit proposals, vote on proposals, and earn rewards for their participation in governance. Internet Computer's investors include Polychain, Scalar Capital, Amino Capital, etc.

# Internet Computer Total ICP staked on NNS Methodology

## 1. Overview

Total ICP Staked on NNS measures the total amount of ICP tokens currently locked in the Internet Computer's Network Nervous System (NNS) for governance participation. This metric represents the aggregate stake of all neurons in the governance system, indicating the level of participation in Internet Computer protocol governance. The calculation aggregates daily snapshots of governance staking data directly from the Internet Computer protocol's network statistics.

## 2. Data sources

The metric relies on the following data sources:

- **Internet Computer network statistics**: Daily aggregated statistics scraped directly from the Internet Computer protocol's governance system
- **NNS governance data**: Total locked ICP amounts from the Network Nervous System, representing tokens staked for governance participation
- **Protocol-level statistics**: Network-wide metrics published by the Internet Computer protocol, including governance participation statistics

The data is collected through external scraping of publicly available Internet Computer network statistics rather than from individual blockchain transactions or events.

## 3. Step-by-step calculation

### Component A: Raw data extraction and parsing
- **Purpose**: Extract daily governance staking statistics from Internet Computer protocol data
- **Logic**: Daily statistics are scraped from the Internet Computer protocol's governance system and stored in JSON format. The system unnests the `daily_stats` JSON array to extract individual daily records. For each day, the system extracts the `day` timestamp and the `governance_total_locked_e8s` field, which represents the total amount of ICP tokens locked in governance neurons. The data extraction handles the nested JSON structure by cross-joining with the unnested daily statistics array.
- **Key fields**: `day` (timestamp for the daily snapshot), `governance_total_locked_e8s` (raw amount in e8s units), `inserted_at` (scraping timestamp for versioning)

### Component B: Data versioning and deduplication
- **Purpose**: Select the most recent version of each daily statistic when multiple scrapes exist
- **Logic**: Since the scraper may collect statistics multiple times per day or update historical values, the system applies a deduplication strategy. Records are partitioned by timestamp and ranked by `inserted_at` timestamp in descending order. Only the most recently scraped version of each daily statistic is retained by selecting records where the row number equals 1.
- **Key fields**: `row_number` (ranking based on insertion timestamp), filtered records with the latest `inserted_at` value for each day

### Component C: Unit conversion and standardization
- **Purpose**: Convert raw governance staking amounts from e8s units to standard ICP token units
- **Logic**: The raw `governance_total_locked_e8s` amounts are denominated in e8s, which are the smallest unit of ICP tokens (similar to satoshis for Bitcoin). To convert to standard ICP token units, the raw amount is divided by 10^8 (100 million), since ICP has 8 decimal places. This conversion produces the final `total_icp_staked_on_nns` value in standard ICP token units.
- **Key fields**: `amount` (converted to ICP tokens), `total_icp_staked_on_nns` (final metric value)

### Final aggregation
- **Combining components**: The components flow sequentially - raw data extraction feeds into versioning/deduplication, which then feeds into unit conversion and standardization
- **Currency conversion**: No currency conversion is applied since the metric is denominated in ICP tokens rather than USD
- **Time aggregation**: The metric uses daily time boundaries based on the `day` field from the source statistics. The finalize metric macro ensures no gaps exist in the daily time series using a forward-fill strategy
- **Final calculation**: The final metric value equals the `governance_total_locked_e8s` amount divided by 100,000,000 (10^8) to convert from e8s units to ICP tokens, representing the total amount of ICP currently staked in NNS governance neurons
