Node operators process transactions and receive token incentives. These independently owned high-spec node machines around the world are connected via Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), creating a self-sovereign network not reliant on any cloud services. Advanced cryptography allows any application or service to be run on the network in a decentralized manner via smart contracts.

The Internet Computer is a decentralized cloud blockchain, where apps can be built fully onchain, using AI, or by coding. Try caffeine.ai & icp.ninja.

ICP tokenholders own and govern the protocol. They currently take (burn) all of the total transaction fees paid by users (revenue). ICP Holders can stake their ICP on the Network Nervous System (NNS), an advanced fully on-chain DAO that facilitates liquid democracy. Staking ICP allows users to submit proposals, vote on proposals, and earn rewards for their participation in governance. Internet Computer's investors include Polychain, Scalar Capital, Amino Capital, etc.

# Internet Computer ckBTC total supply Methodology

## 1. Overview

The ckBTC total supply metric measures the total amount of ckBTC (chain-key Bitcoin) tokens in circulation on the Internet Computer blockchain on a daily basis. This metric tracks the supply of Bitcoin-backed tokens that can be used within the Internet Computer ecosystem. The calculation extracts daily supply snapshots from Internet Computer's infrastructure data, applies data quality controls, and converts the values to standard decimal representation.

## 2. Data sources

The calculation relies on the following data sources:
- **Internet Computer scraper data**: Daily statistics collected from the Internet Computer blockchain infrastructure containing ckBTC supply information
- **JSON-formatted daily statistics**: Structured data feeds that include daily snapshots of ckBTC total supply values
- **Blockchain infrastructure metrics**: Native Internet Computer system data that tracks token supply statistics

## 3. Step-by-step calculation

### Component A: Raw data extraction
- **Purpose**: Extract daily ckBTC total supply values from Internet Computer scraper data
- **Logic**: Parse JSON-formatted daily statistics data to extract the `day` timestamp and `ckbtc_total_supply` amount. The data is sourced from Internet Computer's blockchain infrastructure and stored as JSON objects containing daily statistical snapshots. Each record includes multiple daily statistics with the ckBTC supply being one component
- **Key fields**: `day` timestamp for the supply snapshot date, `ckbtc_total_supply` containing the raw token amount, and `inserted_at` timestamp indicating when the data was collected

### Component B: Data deduplication and quality control
- **Purpose**: Ensure data quality by selecting the most recent data point for each day
- **Logic**: Apply row numbering based on the `inserted_at` timestamp to identify multiple data points for the same day. Select only the most recently inserted record for each day to handle cases where data might be updated or corrected. This ensures each day has exactly one supply value using the latest available information
- **Key fields**: `row_number` to identify the most recent record, `timestamp` for the day, and `amount` containing the daily supply value

### Component C: Gap filling and continuity
- **Purpose**: Handle missing data points by carrying forward previous values
- **Logic**: Use a lag window function to identify the previous day's supply value for each record. When current day data is missing or null, substitute the previous day's value to maintain continuity. This forward-filling approach ensures no gaps exist in the daily time series while preserving the most recent known supply values
- **Key fields**: `amount` for current day supply, `previous_amount` containing the prior day's value, and the coalesced `amount` that fills gaps with previous values

### Final aggregation
- **Combining components**: The processed daily supply data flows through the gap-filling logic to produce a complete time series
- **Currency conversion**: No currency conversion is required as the metric tracks token supply in native ckBTC units
- **Decimal conversion**: Convert from raw integer representation to decimal format by dividing the `amount` by 10^8, as ckBTC uses 8 decimal places following Bitcoin's standard
- **Metadata application**: Apply Token Terminal's standard metric schema including `chain_id` set to 'internetcomputer', `business_line` as 'Blockchain', `market_sector_id` as 'blockchains_l1', and other standardization fields
- **Final calculation**: The final metric value represents the total ckBTC supply in decimal format for each day, validated through the finalize metric macro with forward-fill gap handling and chain availability filtering applied

*This methodology was automatically generated by Token Terminal's methodology analyzer.*
